Founded in 1993, the tents at Concordia Eco Resort aren’t quite luxurious enough to be part of the glamping trend, but are a solid step above rudimentary camping and, thanks to the resort’s location within the Virgin Islands National Park on Saint John, will get you close to the nature you came to see.

The eleven treehouse-style Eco-Tents can accommodate groups as large as five or six guests. They feature a composting toilet, solar heated shower, and a photovoltaic system powering each room’s lighting and fans. Cook your own meals on a two-burner propane stove and tuck in on your private deck, or dine at the resort’s cafe. A premium upgrade will grant you the same amenities at a hillside location overlooking the famous Salt Pond Bay.

Groups of four or fewer might prefer to snag one of the eight new Eco-Studios, whose bathrooms, kitchens, and decor showcase locally made recycled artisan glass. There are also a few suites with full kitchens, wraparound decks, and ocean views. Solo travelers might feel more comfortable in the recently renovated Banana Cabana, a cottage with garden views and a walk-in shower.

Wherever you stay on the property, the resort’s nature trail can lead you on a quick 15-minute walk to Salt Pond Beach, where you’ll find excellent swimming and snorkeling, or you could take a dip in the on-site freshwater pool. The activities desk can also help you book any number of oceanic excursions, including sailing, diving, and kayaking. You can also choose to join a yoga session or watercolor class, massages can be arranged in the privacy of your room, and family friendly movies are screened a few times a week. During peak season, the cafe doesn’t stop at dinner, but also serves happy hour and a Sunday brunch.

Luxury hounds, take note: this is not an all-inclusive haven of endless pampering. WiFi is limited, laundry is coin-operated, and there is one phone available to guests at reception with long distance phone cards available for purchase. Bed linens, bath towels, and kitchen towels are provided, but the resort prefers you stick to just one set, and you’ll have to shell out for beach towels and chairs.

There’s good news for the ultra-budget conscious, however. Concordia offers a work exchange program. Selected applicants can get free lodging for four hours of work a day, typically in maintenance or housekeeping, although other assignments may be given.
